American Flag
The flag of the United States of America is popularly called the American flag. It is the official national flag of our country. The flag consist of thirteen horizontal stripes, seven red alternating with six white. In the upper corner near the staff, there is a blue rectangular field or canton, which contains fifty white five pointed stars.
The Continental congress defined the symbolic meaning of the flag. The color of the flag, red, white, and Blue each denote the virtue on which our country was founded. Red signifies hardiness and valor, white purity and innocence, and the blue is for vigilance, perserverance and justice. The stripes symbolize the thirteen colonies which originally constituted the United States of America, the stars represent the States of the Union.
The American flag is frequently called the Star Spangled Banner, the Stars and Stripes, the Red, White and Blue, and Old Glory. It is believed that Betsy Ross made the first American flag.
The oath of loyalty to the emblem of the United States of America is as follows; I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under GOD, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.
Korea's flag
The Korean flag symbolizes much of the thought, philosophy, and mysticism of the orient. The red and blue swirl is called Taeguk, a perfect balance of harmony.
The flag of the republic of Korea is unique among the national emblems of the world. Its design symbol does not represent geographical or political division or a great historical event or even the aims and ideals of its country. Rather, it is meant to encourage contemplations and philosophic interpretation of the varied meanings of the universe. Ithas many interpretations.
In the center of the white background is a circle divided equally with each part resembling a comma. The upper (red) portion represents the yang and the lower (blue) portion the um, an ancient symbol of the universe in perfect balance and harmony. These two opposites express the dualism of the cosmos or the absolute; fire and water, day and night, good and evil, masculine and feminine, heat and cold and so on. The presence of the duality indicates that life is full of contradictions.
The center thought of the taeguk indicates that while there is constant movement in the sphere of infinity, there is also balance. As a simple example, the opposites of rain and drought may be taken for consideration. Crops must have rain for normal growth, but floods will wash crops away, causing hardship during the dry season.
Three bars at each corner also carry the ideas of opposites and balance. Three unbroken lines represent heaven, while the three broken lines represent earth. The bars in the lower left corner (Two solid) symbolize fire, while the upper right (two broken) represent water.
